Program
For the past four years ASME-IPTI has hosted the BMEA Awards Reception
as a kick off to OTC week. During this reception our Spring award winners
are honored. At this event the spotlight award is the Woelfel Best
Mechanical Engineering Achievement Award. This award is open to OTC
exhibitors only and is in its 25th year.
The Woelfel BMEA recognizes a product, device or system displayed at
the OTC conference, which best reflects innovation and/or practical
use of mechanical engineering in solving problems, improving design
or maximizing performance. Relevant criteria include: Novelty, Impact
on Industry, HSE, State of Development and Presentation.
The winner
of the 25th Annual Woelfel BMEA is the Yantai
Raffles Shipyard for
their 20’000MT gantry crane with multiple hoists - “TAISUN”.
Each year at the
judges discretion the Woelfel Innovation Award can be presented.
The winner of the Innovation Award for 2008 is Versabar for
Versabar "Bottom Feeder".
The Geoca Mechanical Engineering Achievement Award (Oil Drop) went
to Dr. Joe Fowler of Stress Engineering
Services, Inc. Established
in 1965 as an extraordinary award for distinguished and meritorious
achievement
or service in the field of petroleum mechanical engineering, this award
is named after former chair of the petroleum division and former member
of the ASME Board of Governors, Karl Geoca. This award seeks quality
applicants with significant experience and contributions to the field
of mechanical engineering.
The Lubinski Best Paper Award went to P.A. Brown, E. Rooduijn and M
Lemoël, Single Buoy Moorings Inc.; and G. Stone, Murphy Sabah
Oil Co., Ltd. for their paper Kikeh Development: Design of the World’s
1st Gravity Actuated Pipe (GAP) Fluid Transfer System. Annually the
petroleum division honors the best petroleum mechanical engineering
paper presented at OTC. The award is given to encourage high standards
of quality in the papers presented at OTC. The originator of the ASME
Study Committee for the Exchange of Offshore Information that led to
the formation of OTC was Arthur Lubinski, for whom this award is named.
He received the Petroleum Division award for his work in 1968.
We strive to find an interesting venue to hold this prestigious event.
This year it was held at the Parador in the Museum District. This beautiful
facility is Designated as a Texas Historical Landmark.
Each Fall ASME-IPTI holds an award dinner in which a different set
of award winners and volunteers are honored. For information on ASME-IPTI
Awards, either of these events or to make a nomination contact Kim
