Each
Year Shell, ASME, and C-STEM Supported School's Compete Lone Star Regional
First Robotics Competition
Houston, April
10, 2007 – Shell and ASME supported Sharpstown, Westside, Thurgood
Marshall, Carver, Phillis Wheatley, and J.J. Pearce High School along
with Hogg Middle School in the Lone Star Regional FIRST Robotics Competition
(FRC) through a partnership with C-STEM Teacher and Student Support Services.
FRC came to Houston’s Reliant Arena March 29 – 31 to challenge
the teams with the “problem-solving” game “Rack Roll”.
Per FRC rules, the robot, operated by remote control, is designed and
assembled in collaboration with the students and engineer mentors over
a six-week time frame. The competition typically engages high-school level
students and we are very proud to say that we entered the only middle
school that competed this year. There were 52 teams that competed in the
regional events and all of the teams demonstrated excellence in competition
and displayed the spirit of FRC in an environment that encourages achievement
in STEM. The Shell, ASME, and C-STEM partnership directly impacted well
over 150 students and indirectly impacted well over a thousand students.
FIRST, For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology, was
founded in 1989 by Dean Kamen to inspire young people's interest and participation
in science and technology. Based in Manchester, NH, the 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit
public charity designs accessible, innovative programs that motivate young
people to pursue education and career opportunities in science, technology,
engineering and math, while building self-confidence, knowledge and life
skills.
In competition,
J.J. Pearce High School took was a FIRST Lone Star Regional Competition
winner and have advanced to the national competition in Atlanta, Georgia,
April 12-14, 2007. Sharpstown Middle School took the Rookie Inspiration
Award and Hogg Middle School was awarded a Certificate of Congressional
Recognition by Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee.
“Our
goal is to provide student’s with opportunities in math and science
to increase interest in STEM in an effort to build our future workforce.
The FIRST competition experience allowed the Hogg Middle School student’s
integrate STEM to problem solve through robotics. The partnership with
after-school program provider Prepared4Life has ensured that C-STEM has
a platform to expose students to robotics in fun and exciting ways that
applies to real life.” said Reagan Flowers, CEO of C-STEM.
