Update - Pipeline Systems Division

From the Chair

The Pipeline Systems Division (PSD) of ASME is a not for profit organization dedicated to knowledge transfer and development within the global pipeline industry. Since 2007, many important achievements have been made including (but by no means limited to!):

• Implementation of the Visiting Lecturer Program where PSD will pay all expenses for a recognized pipeline expert to provide in-person pipeline engineering training at a recognized university;
• Delivery of the India Oil and Gas Pipeline Conference in New Delhi, India (October 2007);
• Posting of a message board accessible from our website at http://pipeline.asme-ipti.org;
• Publication of a new ASME monogram entitled “Pipeline System Automation and Control: and
• Cooperation with the Petroleum Division of ASME in the delivery of the now annual International Offshore Pipeline Forum (Houston).

As a Division, we have lots to be proud of. And, there is lots more good work underway including educational events in Calgary and South America, the developmental of a pipeline engineering journal and additional conference offerings in India and Europe. All of this work is performed by volunteers who contribute their time and experience to improve the safety and reliability of the global pipeline network.

The not for profit approach embraced by PSD allows us to deliver programs around the world at cost. Margins associated with planning these events are typically less than 15% which is applied as a contingency. The overarching philosophy is to deliver the best possible programs economically and in the interests of the participants. The evidence of this dedication is visible at IPC and other events. For example, at IPC 2008, pipeline professionals can register for full day tutorial sessions on topics such as pipeline 101, pipeline integrity assessments, risk assessment and many others for $250! Many similar versions of these courses are offered commercially for more than 10 times this amount. The instructors providing these do so because they believe in the value the courses provide and want to see that value applied to the industry globally and not just in areas where people can afford to routinely participate in for profit courses.

Similarly, consider IPC itself. A full week conference registration including a copy of the proceedings and meals costs $750 for an ASME member in 2008. Where else in the world can someone attend a world class event such as IPC for that amount of money? Any excess money resulting from events organized by PSD is reinvested in other events or scholarships.

The PSD’s intention to continue to expand course offerings and conferences globally requires considerable effort and all of our active members are heavily involved in development, organization and delivery of these events. We certainly could use the assistance of others. If you are interested in becoming active in PSD, I encourage you to get involved by contacting myself or Kim Miceli at:
