IPTI Board President

Message from the IPTI President

How can we be of service to our membership? This question is a driving force within the mind of each IPTI Board member. Over the next few weeks, the Board will meet to evaluate its performance and determine strategic direction for the organization. With a membership comprised of individuals from industry, academia, and the student sector, each must be closely examined in order to determine the best path forward for all.

One example of direction involves the further development of our Continuing Education programs. In addition to the ongoing programs offered by ASME International, IPTI now has a full time professional directing our educational efforts. During 2007, 170 persons attended courses in six different venues. Already in 2008, 159 individuals have attended existing courses with other new offerings still planned for the latter part of this year. Strong membership interest in IPTI class offerings continues to reinforce education as a major growth focus in the future.

Another target activity involves student activities. The Board recently appointed Glenn MacDonald, a past Chair from the Petroleum Division, to work collectively with all Divisions and develop this service area. In addition, he and the Board are now seeking new members to serve on a multi-university Collegiate Council. This group will provide valuable input and guidance to the Board. In addition to the Council, we have a student intern who not only works with the IPTI staff but also meets with and provides guidance to the Board.

As the age demographics continue to change, we find ourselves looking for new ways to attract and retain young members. Our young professional, Keith Ogdee, focuses on this goal by organizing social and technical gatherings during which peers can interact with one another on both a professional and personal level.

Finally, we find ourselves broadening membership by partnering with other organizations and seeking alliances or mergers from smaller societies and groups. The direction of IPTI continues to evolve, but our primary goal continues to be the same: service to our membership. We would appreciate your ideas and input as we seek to mold and direct the ever changing face of ASME.
